Artist Statement
My art primarily consists of sculptural works that draw inspiration from living organisms’ body parts, structures, environments, and textures. Through my work, I create a connection between myself and the world surrounding me. My work not only helps me understand where I belong in the world, but it also defines and challenges my destiny.
I have always felt that I did not have a specific place where I was from. As a kid, my family and I moved to many different countries. The older I become, the more the feeling of uncertainty about my belongingness arises. It is almost as if my destiny is to live without a space of origin. Nature is the only constant in my life; Therefore, I use its forms —such as wings, hearts, and cocoons— metaphorically to reflect my process of adaptation. Additionally, the techniques I used behind my artworks act as a meditation. Through the use of materials such as fabrics, metals, and glass, I work to overcome the feelings of fear and insecurity to find my place. I take inspiration from the surrealist and pop-surrealist movement, as it transforms natural or everyday objects into a more psychological, yet dreamlike imagery that represents a person’s deeper emotions. For me, art is not just a form of expression, but a skill used to find the balance that I want to have within myself and the unforeseen future; the good and the ugly that the world holds.
Through my work, I encourage the audience to reflect on their experience of belonging; to uncover what aspects link them to their community. I invite them to look into themselves and uncover what makes them feel accepted in the world.
